Wood Stoves
I felt so accomplished when I finally bought a home for my family! It was a dream come true that we finally don’t have to worry about rent, and that now we have ample space for virtually any activity we want to do as a family.
When we first bought our home, there was no heating apparatus like a radiator, or a fireplace.
I just thought maybe it was not too cold here in Springfield in the winter.
I was so wrong.
Autumn was just beginning and I could feel my hair raise from the cold climate. I thought I could just have some specks of ice in my hair – and I was inside the house! I immediately contacted a contractor to install a central heating system in our home. Winter came and it was so cold! I couldn’t imagine how the former resident of this home survived! Having a central heating system sure was a good call.
When it was heavily snowing, especially at night, me and my family always spent the night together in our living room. It was a chance to keep the family close and it helped keep us warm too. We had DVD marathons, played boardgames like monopoly and scrabble, or played on the Wii.
The living room was a room for recreation during winter, however, I felt that there was something missing. There was no focal point in the room. I tried looking for the missing piece in the room and I just couldn’t figure out what. I tried rearranging the room, mixing and matching furniture and curtains – even redecorating the Christmas tree – but to no avail. I could have never realized the missing piece until my youngest daughter Helena asked me,
“Mom, how come we don’t have a chimney? How could Santa enter our home on Christmas?”
That was it! Though I didn’t have an answer to how Santa can enter our home, I realized that the missing piece in our living room was a fireplace! Though the central heating system did its job in circulating heat around the house, but it lacked a more ‘personal touch’ of warmth that a direct fire can give.
Yes! Wood Stoves!
Having a fireplace built immediately would have been a bad idea in this cold idea (besides it being impossible), so I thought of purchasing a more compact solution – Wood Stoves. I was always fascinated with wood stoves since I was a kid because they are just so adorable. I don’t know why I didn’t think of getting one in the first place!
Immediately the next day, I went to the local home store wondering if they had wood stoves and luckily, they did! They had two kinds of wood burning stoves: cast iron and soapstone. I wanted to purchase the cast iron wood stove because it had the classic wood stove look, but I had small children and a cat at home, and if they ever have direct contact with the stove, I would have totally regret buying one. The soapstone wood stove was just as rustic and stylish as the cast iron stove anyway.
Setting Our Wood Stove
I had the stove delivered to our home immediately on that day, and I also bought wood downtown for it too. We set the stove at the wall opposing the window, and we fired it up immediately. I felt like a kid as I watched the flames flicker and dance from the glass viewing window. It was simply amazing.
We almost never turned the wood stove off, because it just gave the house such effective radiant heat. During the day, I even shut the central heating system and just let the stove do its job. Not only did it add beauty to our living room, it also cut our electric bills!
The stove also kept my kids busy. Daisy and Helena spent hours just watching how the flames danced inside the chamber. The charring wood flickered like firework – it was just a fascinating sight. The wood stove simply added some spice in my bland living room, it just made our winter a lot more cozier!
Don’t think that Helena forgot about Santa Claus – I just told her that Santa enters through the backdoor whenever he sees homes without wood stoves and chimneys!
